week5(下1)-The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant Is Filming In A Highly Unusual Way

BY JOSEPH BAXTER 1 YEAR AGO COMMENTS

The Revenant, the upcoming ambitious outdoor epic by Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu is apparently a really, REALLY difficult shoot. The historical survival/revenge drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio has been shooting for six months in the rather inhospitable Canadian wilderness - but according to the director, it has all been working out as he originally planned. It turns out that his desire to film in extremely remote locations has led him to make the movie in a very unconventional manner: he's filming the movie in very small bits and pieces.

Inarritu recently sat down for an interview with Deadline, which eventually saw the subject shift to The Revenant - a project that sees him constantly flying back and forth to wintery Calgary while he also participates in award season campaigning for Birdman. For the director, his unconventional cinematography and psychology inBirdman has garnered a tremendous amount of momentum, including, notably, some Oscar hopes. However, that film’s urban setting could be compared to a luxurious dream in comparison to the snow-ridden woods, nestled far away from any signs of civilization that The Revenant is currently providing the director. The elements have proven to be a formal adversary and has forced Iñárritu into a what will be a 9 month shoot that culminates in either April or May - with shoots chopped into "very small hours," thanks to the extremely limited sunlight. The filmmaker explained,

It was planned this way, to be little-by-little jewel moments; that’s the way I designed the production. That was both to create intensity in this moments, as well as the climate conditions. We are shooting in such remote far-away locations that, by the time we arrive and have to return, we have already spent 40% of the day. But those locations are so gorgeous and so powerful, they look like they have never been touched by a human being, and that’s what I needed. The light is very reduced here in winter, and we are not shooting with any electrical lighting, just natural light. And every single scene is so difficult — emotionally, technically.
For all the confidence and momentum on which Iñárritu is currently riding, this shoot definitely has him rattled and thinking he bit off a bit more than he can chew. In a surprising bit of professional candor, the director told the interviewer, "I’ve gotten myself into trouble again, but I’m trying my best." However, tough-ass shoot aside, Iñárritu remains resolute, and it will be interesting to see what will come out when a historical wilderness story is put through the creative mixer of his artfully unique pathos-heavy palette.

The Revenant will have Leonardo DiCaprio putting on a performance unlike anything we've previously seen from him, playing a dirty, rugged mountain man named Hugh Glass, whose real-life survival ordeal is the stuff of legend. Out with a hunting party, Glass would be attacked by a bear and left for dead by a craven duo (played by Tom Hardy and Will Poulter) who were tasked with either helping him recover or burying him with proper respect. Glass would channel some unprecedented badassery by not only surviving, but making a brutal 200 mile journey across present day South Dakota, sporting gravely gruesome injuries. His motivation for survival? Revenge. Pure and simple. Will he get it? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see. It will be like Jeremiah Johnson and the Kill Bill films had a rugged, yet still aesthetically pleasing DiCaprio baby.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant looks to reinvent historical drama into deep psychological justice porn when it is set to hit theaters on January 8, 2016.

Worst cold spell in 10 years to hit Taiwan this weekend

CNA

January 20, 2016, 12:00 am TWN

TAIPEI -- Residents of many parts of Taiwan may have to endure what feel like below zero temperatures from Jan. 23 to 25 as the worst cold wave in 10 years sweeps the country, the Central Weather Bureau said Tuesday.

The mercury is forecast to drop on Jan. 23, but the coldest temperatures are expected to be seen on Jan. 24 and 25, and "apparent temperatures" — the temperature the human body feels — could fall below zero, the bureau said.

On Jan. 23, the apparent temperature could reach lows of 6 degrees in New Taipei, 5 degrees in Taipei, 4 degrees in Taichung and Kaohsiung, 2 degrees in Tainan, 1 degree in Hsinchu County, and zero degrees in Hsinchu City and Miaoli County.

On Jan. 24, the apparent temperature could fall to a low of minus 1 degree in Hsinchu City and to a low of minus 1 to minus 2 degrees the following day in Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City and Miaoli County, bureau data showed.

Over those two days, apparent temperatures could dip to 2-3 degrees in Taipei, 3-4 degrees in New Taipei, 2 degrees in Taichung, 2-3 degrees in Kaohsiung and 1 degree in Tainan, all roughly 3-5 degrees lower than the actual recorded temperature.

The Central Weather Bureau said the apparent temperature factors in relative humidity and the effect of the wind, with the latter expected to be the main factor this weekend.
It said a wind speed of more than 36 kilometers per hour can push the apparent temperature 6 degrees below the actual temperature.

Even without humidity and wind speeds factored in, this weekend's cold front is expected to be the worst since 2005, when temperatures of 5.6 Celsius degrees in Taipei and 4.4 degrees in Chiayi were recorded on March 6 that year.

week3(下1)-North Korea nuclear:hydrogen bomb test

North Korea nuclear: State claims first hydrogen bomb test

6 January 2016

North Korea says it has successfully carried out its first underground test of a hydrogen bomb - a more powerful weapon than an atomic bomb.
If true it would be its fourth nuclear test since 2006 and mark a huge advance in its nuclear capabilities.
The announcement was swiftly criticised by world leaders with South Korea calling it "a grave provocation to our national security".
But there has been no independent confirmation of the North's claim yet.

Can North Korea now launch a nuclear missile?

Despite North Korea's claims, experts are sceptical that North Korea can make a nuclear weapon small enough to fit on a missile.

What do we know about the latest test?

Observers agree a nuclear explosion of some kind took place and it seems to have been a bit bigger than the last test in 2013, but not nearly big enough to be a full thermonuclear explosion - an "H-bomb" - as Pyongyang claims.

Why can't the world stop them?

North Korea has a determination to defy both world opinion and heavy sanctions to reach their nuclear goal. Crucially, its main ally, China, has proved either unwilling or unable to help.

Suspicion an underground test had been carried out was first raised after the US Geological Survey detected unusual seismic activity at 10:00 Pyongyang time (01:30 GMT) - in the north-east of the country,
A 5.1 magnitude tremor was detected about 50km (30 miles) from Kilju city, near the Punggye-ri nuclear site, which monitors said was likely not natural.
Hours later, in a surprise announcement, a newsreader on North Korean state TV said: "The republic's first hydrogen bomb test has been successfully performed at 10:00 am on January 6, 2016."
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had said last month that Pyongyang had developed a hydrogen bomb, although many experts were sceptical.
It could be days or weeks before independent tests are able to verify or dismiss the recent claim.
Hours before the seismic activity, South Korean media reported that Pyongyang had test-fired a ballistic missile from a submarine in late December. It is unclear whether the test was successful or not.
North Korea said in May it had conducted a similar successful submarine launch.

week2(下1)-Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above

“Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above” Launched Brisbane Premiere

By ShanJuLin  |  Posted July 15, 2014  |  Brisbane, Australia

Award winning documentary “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above” launched Brisbane Premiere on 9th July 2014 at Hoyts Cinema in Sunnybank Plaza. The Director of the film Mr. Chi Po-lin and Producer Mrs. Tseng Chiung-Yao both attended the Premiere. Their attendance was broadly welcomed by the government, communities and commercial firms. The red carpet event was organized by World Arts & Multi-Culture Inc. (WAMCI).

“Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above” (Chinese: 看見台灣) is a 2013 documentary film which documents Taiwan completely in aerial photography, offering a glimpse of Taiwan's natural beauty as well as the effect of human activities and urbanization on our environment.

After the huge flood in 2009, which has flushed few villages and the natural beauty of Taiwan away, due to the over industrial developments, Chi has decided to abandon his public service career 3 years before his retirement and started to make the film to evoke people’s attention on the serious environmental issues that Taiwan is facing.

The film is directed by aerial photographer Chi Po-Lin and produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien, with narration by Wu Nien-jen. The music is composed by Ricky Ho, with three songs written and performed by Nolay Piho (Lin Ching-tai). The film launched on November 1 2013 at 44 theatres in Taiwan, with Chinese and English subtitles. The film broke the Taiwan box office records for the largest opening weekend and the highest total gross of a locally produced documentary. The film was nominated for Best Documentary and Best Original Film Score at the 50th Golden Horse Awards, winning the best documentary category.

week1(下1)-Californi Shooting

At Least 14 Dead in Californi Shooting,Two Suspects Killed

At least 14 people were killed and two suspects were dead Wednesday after two people on a mission that authorities described as "possibly terrorism" barged into a holiday party in a California conference room and unleashed a bloodbath.
The shooters fled in a black SUV after the rampage at about 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET) inside the Inland Regional Center, a state-run center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, about 55 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, police said.
Seventeen other people were wounded, they said. Authorities said that no motive had been determined and that terrorism had not been ruled out.
Details:
  • The shooting erupted during a holiday party in a conference room. Fourteen people were killed.
  • At least 10 of the 17 wounded are in critical condition.
  • Police shot two suspects after a high-speed chase in a shootout hours later. They were identified as a man Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and a woman, Tashfeen Malik, 27.
  • The suspects were killed.
  • A third person seen fleeing from the scene of the shootout is in custody.
  • A police officer was wounded in the shootout.
Police said "explosive devices" were found inside the resource center during a secondary sweep and that they were rendered safe.
Marybeth Feild, president of the center's board of trustees, said the gunfire erupted in a conference room where the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health was holding a banquet.

About 4½ hours after the shootings, police checking a lead in the nearby town of Redlands began chasing a car believed to be related to the incident, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. The chase led back to San Bernardino, where two people described as suspects — a man and a woman — were killed, he said.
They were identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, a U.S.-born environmental specialist for San Bernardino County, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, about whom little was known.
A third person who was seen running away from the shootout scene was in custody, Burguan said. Investigators weren't able to begin searching the vehicle until Wednesday night, after they had rendered explosives at that scene safe, he said.
He said an officer was shot in the confrontation but didn't suffer a life-threatening wound and was expected to be OK.
Burguan said Farook and Malik were related in some fashion, possibly as husband and wife or as an engaged couple. A person named Syed Farook is listed in public records as a resident of the Redlands address from which police tracked the SUV involved in the shootout.
Burguan said the suspects were armed with assault-style rifles and semiautomatic handguns. Sources close to the investigation told NBC News that the ATF had traced four firearms and that two of them were known to have been purchased legally by an individual connected to the investigation. Information on the two other firearms wasn't available.
